Embedded Rust Training for Engineering Teams

Three hands-on Rust trainings: from getting started to Embedded Linux and microcontrollers without the standard library (no_std). Remote or on-site with your team, at a fixed price.

Topic and technology requests are no problem when agreed beforehand. Depending on your team's prior knowledge, some topics can be slimmed down or specific wishes covered in depth.

Rust Basics

A hands-on introduction to Rust for developers who already know a programming language a little. C is ideal, C++ works too, and we can also work well coming from Go or Python.

Remote
3–4 days · €12,000 plus VAT
On-site
4 days, Tuesday to Friday noon · €15,000 plus VAT, travel included
Participants
5–10
Language
English or German
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of any programming language (ideally C)

Topics

Toolchain Types Functions Structs Naming conventions Ownership & borrowing Conditions & loops Enums (also with different member types) match in many flavours Error handling Optional values Code base structure Visibility Traits: derive, manual, your own Unit & integration tests Embedded cross compilation Logging Collections Debugging CI/CD basics: build, test, release

No learning from an ivory tower: we try things out with lots of coding and learn from them. Together we implement a small, coherent game. First comes the problem, then the solution, so the game keeps getting better with every topic. You work alone, in small teams or all together.

Alternatively, by arrangement, we build a first productive program from your domain during the training.

Rust Advanced: Embedded Linux

Rust for applications and services on Embedded Linux devices: concurrent, well tested and with a secured build and release pipeline.

Topics

Iterators & declarative collection processing Cargo features Async with smol and tokio Crate & dependency management Synchronization D-Bus Web server with axum Testing async code, especially tokio Advanced CI/CD: audit, SBOM, Renovate Security

Same approach here: lots of coding, little theory. The game from Rust Basics continues and grows step by step with the new topics.

Rust Advanced: Embedded no_std

Rust directly on the microcontroller, without the standard library. We work with exactly one platform: STM32, nRF52 or ESP32. Your own custom hardware can be covered as well.

Hardware
STM32, nRF52 or ESP32 (one platform per training) or your custom hardware

Topics

Remote or on-site

Trainings take place remotely or on-site with your development team. I regularly travel throughout Northern and Central Germany and am happy to discuss other locations. Dates are arranged individually.

Training by an embedded engineer

I work as an embedded engineer on Embedded Linux, firmware architecture, testing and Rust, and teach Rust from the perspective of real product development.

That includes my own open source work such as a Rust crate for IPv6 Router Advertisement and an open home automation platform built from custom hardware and software. More on the home page.

Frequently asked questions

What prior knowledge do we need for Rust Basics?

Basic knowledge of any programming language. C is ideal, C++ works too, and we can also work well coming from Go or Python.

How much does a training cost?

Each training has a fixed price for a team of 5–10 participants: €12,000 remote, €15,000 on-site (4 days, Tuesday to Friday noon, travel costs included), each plus VAT.

In which language are the trainings held?

In English or German, whichever suits your team.

Can the content be adapted to our team?

Yes. Topic and technology requests are no problem when agreed beforehand. Depending on prior knowledge, some topics are slimmed down or specific wishes covered in depth.

Which hardware is used in the no_std training?

STM32, nRF52 or ESP32, with one platform chosen per training. Your custom hardware can be covered as well.

Can we work on our own project during the training?

In Rust Basics, by arrangement, we can build a first productive program from your domain instead of the exercise game.
